Just had my first surf lesson and felt really safe with him, so I could enjoy the first time a lot. He is very experienced and he adjusts his surf lessons to your skill level to find an individual way for you. I liked it!
Finally found the perfect surf instructor and surf spot in Bali! I was coming back from a 3-year break from surfing (stagnated at intermediate beginner stage for a long time before that as could not find an effective coach). Yanto is a great surfer and teacher. He is able to assess your level quickly and find a good fit for you. He explains both techniques and wave knowledge clearly. I had effective sessions because he was around to help me read the waves and pick the right ones, plus of course give a good push off. In fact, that is the thing that maximizes the session as he is good at picking waves. He is also very willing to spend time outside of the water to explain how to read and choose waves, if you are willing to learn, as he does not wish for you to be pushed off by an instructor forever! He’s laid back and patient which is important out on the water but also works hard when the time comes. Plus his cheerful nature makes the situation funny even when you’re struggling to paddle back out against the waves. Always singing too! One thing I noticed is that he does not compromise on safety, especially since the conditions can get rough at certain times. He advises on best times of the day to learn to surf at your level, and that is important from the several places I’ve been to, as it’s all too common for beginners to be hurt from overcrowded surf and waves too big for them if surf schools just take out big groups for lessons any time of the day. The most important takeaway he gave me about Canggu beach: every level can surf everyday, you just have to find the right time and tide and conditions. Thanks Yanto!
